So much (or so little) has gone on with the Giants going into the season that I decided to wait a little before I posted my initial analysis. I will say, on first look, I had no idea what the Giants were doing. First let me address the major issues. Letting Boss go was huge. It was even more huge than losing Smith (bastard son of a bitch) because we needed a strong, sure-handed, reliable receiver up the middle after not getting Plax back here.
As far Steve Smith goes, screw him. Listen, I was a huge fan of Steve Smith and I also followed him on facebook. He always spouted his loyalty to the Giants and he used to make fun of the Eagles all the time. And now he's going to the Eagles???? He could have gone to any other team..but the Eagles, for reals?? Take your bum leg and leave then. The Giants don't owe you anything.
Losing Plax to the Jets hurt but one thing I am realizing about Plax is he hates rules. That is the main reason he didn't want to sign with the G-Men, because he couldn't follow rules. Couldn't follow NY City laws or the Giants rules. And the rules were to SHOW UP TO PRACTICE. That is your job, dude. I don't care who you are. What, the Giants and Coughlin were supposed to treat you with kid gloves since you were the star receiver? Get out of here. No one gets special treatment and instead of just being a man and doing what you were supposed to do, you instead whine about it and shoot yourself in the leg. Nice job. Go ahead, go to the Jets. I am happy but surprised the Eagles didn't pick you up. That team loves ex-cons.
The Osi situation is a little irritating I must admit. I get his point but at the same time, I feel like we go through this with Osi every other year. Like dude, you have two years left on your contract. Shut up and freagin play. Or take a one year and go test the waters. Thats fine too. I was a little bit more upset a few weeks ago about the possibility of Osi leaving the Giants, but after seeing JPP play last night against the Panthers, I think I am ok with it. Lol. I still want him to sign because with Tuck, Osi, JPP, and Kiwanuka, every QB that faces the Giants is going to eat some serious dirt. But last night showed me it wasn't an absolute necessity.
Receiving core: I actually think the Giants have some weapons here people are forgetting. Yes, we lost Boss and Smith but I think Manningham and Nicks are awesome and are only going to improve every year they play. Now, if they can just hold on to the ball. They were the cause of at least 7 of Eli's interceptions last year. It's not a hot potato, mofos. Its a football. Stop greasing your gloves up with butter before the game and catch the damn thing. And let's not forget that Hixon is back, which will not only improve the receiving possibilities but also the kick return.
That leads me into the special teams. Oh man, did the Giants look straight up horrendous on special teams last year. Lawrence Tynes is still as inconsistent as usual and Matt Dodge can't punt a football to save his life. Good news on that front is that they hired one of the most acclaimed special teams coaches out there, ex-Patriot and Jets special teams coach, Larry Izzo. He's bound to clean up the Giants act.
QB: I know people give Eli a lot of flack but honestly he had a career year last year. He threw for over 4000 yards, had 31 TDs and, yes, 25 interceptions but like I said earlier, at least 7 or 8 of those were the fault of the receivers. So his stats are more like 31 TDs, 17 interceptions which is still not the greatest but a lot better the actual numbers tell. Besides, you have to realize losing his automatic weapons last year, Hixon at the beginning of the year, Smith during the year and Manningham and Nicks for a few games in between, Eli was pressing to find receivers to throw to and likewise, probably threw balls he shouldnt have. I like Eli. As long as his O-line can give him some time and his young receivers learn how to hold on to the ball, he'll be fine.
O-Line: The news of O'Hara and Seubert both leaving were huge blows to me. O'Hara was getting up in age but both he and Seubert were both work horses and hustled and played hard. Getting Baas from the 49ers was huge. He's younger than O-Hara, has better hands and is quick. David Diehl is still a force up the middle and him along with Koets and Kareem McKenzie should provide ample protection for Eli while Baas learns the system.
D-Line: The Giants have had a great D-Line the last few years and this year, it looks to be just plain retarded again. JPP is going to have a monster year. He's a explosive beast and now that he knows all of Fewell's plays, he just reacting as soon as the ball is snapped. This was evident in the Giants preseason game against the Panthers yesterday. And he did this all against two-time Pro-Bowler, Jordan Gross. Dude is going to have a sick year and if the Giants get Osi back on the team, I will go on a limb and say the Giants will lead the league in sacks this year. Add in the raw talent of rookie, Marvin Austin, and the Giants D-Line looks unstoppable.
Secondary: I was so so so excited when the Giants got Prince Amukumara. I know he still has to prove himself but they are calling this kid a Young Revis. And then he goes and breaks his foot the first day of practice. Sigh... but the good news is, he will only miss the first 5 games and then be back with the team. Chances are, of course, he wont be back up to speed in 5 games but I am hoping he'll still have an impact on the Giants later in the year, when it counts. Antrel Rolle and healthy Kenny Phillips are a great tandem in the backfield and the addition of rookies like Michael Coe (who impressed me with his D last night on what would have been a wide open catch in the endzone) ensure that as long as the secondary is healthy, QBs (if they can get the ball off with our D-line hounding them) will have a hard time passing the ball down the field.
All in all, I think the Giants have a very raw, yet underrated team this year which is a position they love to be in. The last time they didnt make any offseason moves and were this underrated was in 2008. And we all what happened that year. Brady is still having nightmares about that one. :)
